Are low-calorie diets sustainable?

Yes, you have to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight but letting calories go too low for an extended period of time can be detrimental. Not only is it unsustainable, you could be putting your health at risk. The average MALE needs about 2500-3000 calories per day and the average FEMALE needs 1800 - 2000 per day. Cutting some calories to lose layers is fine and necessary but there seems to be a trend (the dreaded following-without-knowing-why) towards ultra-low calories. People figure, if low is good, ultra low (1000 or under) must be great and help me lose weight faster! Not true. Not only do you need calories to think and move, but you your vital organs need them so they can function, almost forgot about that one didn’t you. Ulta-low calories can be dangerous for a sustained period of time and send your body into a metabolic stall.
